The distance between a treaty and a country that can use it.
That distance is where I work. I draft the national legislation that turns global commitments into enforceable law, advise on pandemic preparedness and access to medical countermeasures, and litigate health rights before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court.
Most global health law is written in one place and has to work in another.
Instruments negotiated in Geneva arrive in capitals as obligations without machinery. Someone has to write the statute, design the regulation, and anticipate how it will be challenged in court. That translation is unglamorous and it is the whole game.
I have drafted a national alcohol control bill for WHO Timor-Leste, led the legal team on Bhutan's multisectoral NCD action plan, and assessed the public health laws of 47 countries across the WHO African Region. I also practise — as an Advocate at the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court since 2017, and formerly as judicial clerk to Justice Dr. A. K. Sikri.
